MUSIC IN THE STREETS IN WASHINGTON, NC
Everyone Loves A Street Dance!
Wouldn’t it be fun to live in a small town where the city officials blocked off main street on one Friday night per month for a FREE street dance? Well, if you happen to live in or around Washington, NC, you probably know that this is reality in this small river town in eastern NC. As a matter of fact, we have been doing this for 10 years now and it is known as Music in the Streets in Washington, NC.
Naturally, we enjoy Music in the Streets in Washington, NC during the warm months from April through October. What has become a Washington tradition, is held every 3rd Friday evening during the aforementioned months. Bands are invited from far and near to come and showcase their best stuff. Both the streets and sidewalks are usually packed with passers by, many of whom stop from time to time and “cut the rug” a little.
Practically every genre of music is represented. The performers range from as few as one person with an acoustic instrument to a band of several performers with all the equipment to “reach out and touch someone.” Typically, the performers set up on the sidewalks in front of the businesses and those being entertained fill the street and opposing sidewalks.
Now, one would think that several bands stretched up and down Main Street in Washington, NC would create an absolute jumble of unintelligible noise. The truth is that it is surprising how well the different sounds are segmented as one walks down the street. It is also surprising how many of the people in the crowd show up with their “penny loafers” on and are ready to dance. Many of the very best dancers don’t mind showing the more “youth challenged” people around them how it is done.
